SUFFOLK - COMPLETED 2003

RIBA National Award, 2004

Manser Medal – House of the Year shortlist 2004.

The project led by James Gorst Architects featured the conservation and restoration of Grade II listed Tudor Suffolk farmhouse, conversion of adjacent barn and construction of a contemporary oak clad two-storey extension.

BBUK designed the landscape which included formal planting around the house that dissolved into wilder flower mixes as the garden began to merge with the wider landscape of the Suffolk countryside. The 8-acre gardens were designed to be low maintenance, with an existing natural pond and fruit trees preserved, a haha was introduced to separate the formal garden areas from the paddock without the need for a fence. Adjacent to the house, a reflecting pool was designed to provide a mirror for the timber library extension and specially commissioned garden sculpture.
